In the early weeks of September, upperclassmen at Chowan University secretly stalked the hallways, scouring classrooms for the best and brightest of their peers to surprise them with an invitation into the academically-elite honor societies. Almost 100 students were called forward for this fall’s “tapping” of the honors organizations, which now number 14 on the historic campus.

Alpha Chi (for juniors and seniors), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Pi Gamma Mu (social sciences), Alpha Phi Sigma (criminal justice), Psi Chi (psychology), Kappa Delta Pi (education), and Phi Epsilon Kappa (physical education) tapped 94 students for their fall memberships. Induction ceremonies for each society will be held later in the semester.

Sigma Zeta, a national honor society in science and mathematics, will tap new members, charter a chapter, and induct its first class later this semester. With the addition of this honor society, Chowan now has 14 honor societies and the Honors College program.

The Spring Honor Societies Tap Days are January 20th and 21st. The following honors societies will tap and induct in the spring: Alpha Chi (for juniors and seniors), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Pi Gamma Mu (social sciences), Alpha Phi Sigma (criminal justice), Psi Chi (psychology), Beta Beta, Beta (biology), Alpha Lambda Delta (for first-year students), Sigma Tau Delta (English), Sigma Zeta (science/mathematics), Sigma Beta Delta (business), Kappa Pi (art), Theta Alpha Kappa (religion), and Phi Epsilon Kappa (physical education).
