Chase and Tutherow Grab CIAA Volleyball Weekly Honors
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in conjunction with the Volleyball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association announced the CIAA Volleyball Players and Coach of the Week honorees on Tuesday afternoon. Chowan University's Suraya Chase and Ashley Tutherow were recognized as CIAA Player of the Week and CIAA Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Chase, a native of Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago, collected 40 kills over the course of three matches for the Chowan Blue and White as the Hawks posted a 1-2 record. Her top performance was a 19-kill outing in Chowan's win over West Virginia Wesleyan in a five-set thriller.
Tutherow had a breakout weekend for the Hawks in her first collegiate matches. She tallied 39 kills as Chowan finished 1-2 as part of the Winston-Salem State Spike-Out Hunger Challenge. The Mesa, Arizona native tallied 18 kills in the Hawks' win over West Virginia Wesleyan, seven kills in a 3-1 loss to Shepherd and 14 kills in Chowan's 3-1 setback to Fairmont State.
Andi Henderson of Winston-Salem State was named CIAA Coach of the Week after leading the Lady Rams to a 2-1 record this weekend. Winston-Salem State defeated Shepherd University and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Barton College for a 7:00pm match-up against the Lady Bulldogs.
