Hawks Shut Down The Lincoln University
The Chowan University women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over the visiting Lady Lions of The Lincoln University on Saturday evening. The victory was the first for the Hawks since October 10th, 2014, and also the first for first year Head Coach Chris White. Chowan's five goals in Saturday's contest matches the total number of goals scored over the course of the entire 2014 season.
Chowan out-shot the Lady Lions 23-11 over the course of the contest and held Lincoln to a mere three shots on goal while notching 12 of their own. Christine Chubb had a break out game for Chowan with a hat-trick in just her second collegiate contest. She notched a total of six shots in the contest, four of which were on goal. Samantha Persingerand Kylie McGrath each tallied four shots with Monica Hayward adding three. Persinger and McGrath had three and two shots on goal, respectively, with Karen Keteltas andMonica Hayward each adding one shot on goal for the Chowan Blue and White.
In the 27th minute of play, a Lady Lion foul led to a penalty kick for the Hawks. Chubb made good on the opportunity as she put the Hawks on the board with goal into the near post. Five minutes later, Olivia Borer's cross found Chubb, who found the back of the net again for the Hawks to push Chowan ahead 2-0.
In the 59th minute of play, Chubb went to work for the Hawks again, netting her third goal of the contest using the assist from Persinger. Less than two minutes later, Emily Cross connected with McGrath , who sent the ball into the far post past Lincoln's diving keeper, resulting in a comfortable 4-0 advantage for Chowan. In the 63rd minute of play, Persinger beat the Lady Lions' last defender and sent the ball into the near post off the crossbar.
Marissa Ghani earned the win in goal for the Hawks after making one save in the first half. Borer picked up two saves in goal for Chowan in the second half, contributing to the shut-out victory.
Kaylee Dennis made seven saves in goal for the Lady Lions. Kayla Butts accounted for two of the team's shots on goal while Tamara Greene added one to aid the effort.
Chowan will compete in their second game in as many days on Sunday when the Hawks square off against Shepherd University at 12:00pm.
