Campus Modifications for a Safe Reopening

Jul 24, 2020 by Staff Reports

Chowan University has made adjustments to the fall 2020 semester to support health and encourage learning. As always, our goal is to offer an outstanding academic experience to every student. In preparation for the fall, the University has made, and will continue to make, a variety of changes to campus facilities to assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors in staying healthy and practicing social distancing.

At the direction of the COVID-19 Task Force and University leadership, the University Maintenance and Grounds in conjunction with housekeeping have been coordinating these changes.  In some areas, transparent shields have been installed as well as directional barriers. Increased cleaning and disinfecting have taken place all over campus and maintenance is also coordinating the installation of over 100 additional sanitizing stations around campus.

Chowan has designed, printed, and installed over 2,200 signs to serve as visual reminders and aides to navigate the campus to assist with social distancing to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.  The 2,200 signs were designed and printed “in-house” through a partnership of the University Print and Production team and the faculty.

The Chowan University leadership is and will continue to make decisions based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the State of North Carolina. “Chowan University cares passionately about our campus and the Murfreesboro communities. As such, we have made significant efforts to ensure our facilities are clean to include the introduction of a disinfectant spraying of all our bathrooms, eating areas, classrooms, open study areas, dressing rooms, athletic training facilities, and other areas designed to place a barrier to protect against all bacteria-based contagions and COVID-19” shared Danny Davis, Vice President for Business and Finance, who oversees University facilities and housekeeping. “Additionally each student, faculty, and staff member will be issued a minimum of two face masks and a small bottle of hand sanitizer upon arrival.  We are committed to a proactive strategy in efforts to keep our students, faculty, and staff safe as we pray for a speedy conclusion to this pandemic.”

The University will continue to share updates for the Fall 2020 Safe Reopening at chowan.edu/reopening.
