Shots Fired at Whites Crossing, University Quick to Respond

Sep 27, 2019 by Staff Reports

In the early morning hours of September 22, 2019, shots were fired at Whites Crossing student housing. Thanks to immediate student action, campus, local, and state authorities were quickly on the scene.

Two suspects were arrested by Campus Police on Union Street, near the intersection of Cotton Street. Neither suspect is affiliated with Chowan University.

Property damage reported at Whites Crossing is still being assessed, though both personal and real damages have been confirmed.

Two students were injured off-campus prior to the shots fired at Whites Crossing and taken to area medical facilities. Both were discharged on Sunday. To respect their privacy, no further information on their identities or injuries has been released.

The President, campus officials, and local authorities gathered in Turner Auditorium to address the students and university community on Monday afternoon regarding the incident. Campus and local police have continued to increase campus patrols in marked and unmarked vehicles.

Chowan is cooperating with university, local, and state authorities in their ongoing investigation of these off-campus injuries. Further information will be released when it is made available to the University.

For those in need, please do not hesitate to seek counseling through Minister to the University Mari Wiles (252-398-6268 or wilesm@chowan.edu) and University Counselor Yolanda Majette (252-398-6249 or majety@chowan.edu) during this difficult time.
