9/5 2:00 pm Update: Chowan University continues to monitor the progress of Hurricane Dorian. Please be aware of the following:
COUNTY-WIDE CURFEW IN EFFECT– A county-wide curfew will be in effect beginning at midnight tonight and ending at 6:00 am on Friday morning, September 6. All students should remain in their residence halls for the duration of the curfew.
DINING AND SHUTTLE SERVICES – Chowan University continuous serve dining is in operation today (Thursday) from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The only meals served tomorrow (Friday) will be Brunch from 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. and Dinner from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Shuttle service will operate between Whites Crossing/Parker and Thomas Dining Hall/Main Campus during Brunch hours to transport students from one end of the campus to the other. Students will be required to show Chowan ID before boarding the shuttle. Space will be limited. Students who are able and feel safe to walk should do so. Use good judgment and be cautious.
Saturday and Sunday will resume dining services operations under normal hours.
Murf’s closed at 3:00 p.m. today and will reopen for business under normal operating hours on Monday.

9/4 2:00 pm Update: Chowan University continues to monitor the potential impact of Hurricane Dorian in partnership with local and state agencies. As a result of newly updated reports, the following decisions are in effect.
CLASS AND ACTIVITY CANCELLATION SCHEDULE – All classes and all campus activities will be canceled beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, September 5, 2019. We anticipate the University will resume its normal operating schedule at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, September 7, 2019, and classes will resume a normal meeting schedule on Monday, September 9, 2019. (Please monitor University updates as noted in the list below.)
CAMPUS OFFICES’ CLOSURE SCHEDULE – University Offices will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019. The University will resume normal business operations at 10:00 am on Saturday morning, September 7, 2019 under normal operating schedule. Essential personnel will remain on duty as assigned by their supervisors.
RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS – Residential students are highly encouraged to either travel home or find a friend with whom they can stay during the storm. Residence halls will remain open and staffed to accommodate those students who choose to stay on campus. All residential students are required to register with Residence Life Staff about where they will be staying during the storm period. Please stay safe, and use good judgment and caution if you choose to travel away from campus during this storm period.
Please note that the Office of Residence Life will be sending an email directly to all residential students with further instructions by 5 p.m. today (Wednesday, September 4, 2019).
DURING THE STORM – Students remaining on campus must abide by storm-related guidelines, which require everyone to remain in their assigned residence halls on campus from 8 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2019 until 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2019. The exception will be to travel as a group to Thomas Dining Hall for meals at the designated times below. (Contingent on weather conditions.)
MEAL SCHEDULE – For residential students who cannot leave campus, please be advised that meal service will continue on a regular schedule on Wednesday evening, and continuous serve will be available on Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The only meals served on Friday will be Brunch from 11:15 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.; and Dinner from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will resume operations under normal hours. VEHICLE OWNERS – Anyone leaving a vehicle on campus during the storm period should move the vehicle to a paved parking lot on high ground, including the Whites Crossing/Parker Parking Lot or the Horner Graphic Communications Center Parking Lot. ***DO NOT leave vehicles on grass or unpaved parking lots.
MONITORING THE STORM AND ANNOUNCEMENTS – The University will continue to monitor the weather conditions. Students, faculty, and staff will be notified by Chowan email, website (www.chowan.edu), social media (www.facebook.com/chowanuniversity; www.instagram.com/chowanuniversity) and CU Hawk Alert (www.chowan.edu/cuhawkalert) regarding updates to the University's operating schedule. Television stations: WRAL, WNCT, WITN, WTKR3, WAVY 10/FOX 43, and WVEC 13 will receive our updates. We will also share updates with FM radio station 98.3, 99.3, 101.7, 88.5, and 101.4.
