CURSES! Theatre@Chowan Presents Mmmbeth!

Mar 27, 2019 by Staff Reports

Theatre @ Chowan will present three performances of Allison Williams’s short comedy, Mmmbeth, on April 12, 13, and 14, 2019.

They say the play is cursed! According to theatrical lore, speaking the title of Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” in a theatre brings about bad things like death, destruction, and diarrhea. This is the premise of Allison Williams’s comic spoof of Shakespeare’s tragic play where almost everything goes wrong: The witches take over the storytelling. Queen Duncan would rather open a donut franchise than die. Murderers murder themselves. The actors wear the wrong costumes, from the wrong time period. And a fortune-telling magic-eight ball has more pop-up ads than predictions. It all adds up to madness as Mmmbeth faces a series of hilarious inconveniences on his way to becoming, and unbecoming, the king.

The 9-member cast is comprised of Chowan University students: Amyah Jones (Sophomore; Roanoke Rapids, NC), Joshua Bryant (Junior; Goldsboro, NC), Breauna Johnson (Sophomore; Charlotte, NC), Jeremiah Cook (Senior; New Carrollton, MD), Tyanna Fuller (Sophomore; Lexington, NC), Kaylah James- Jones (Sophomore; Roanoke Rapids, NC), Alyssia Parker (Junior; Suffolk, VA), Shanelle Thompson (Sophomore; Kannapolis, NC), and Khadijah Pierce (Junior; Smithfield, NC).

Steven Harders, Professor of Speech and Drama at Chowan University, directs the production.

Performances are Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13 at 7 pm, and Sunday, April 14 at 2:30 pm. Performances take place in Turner Auditorium in the McDowell Columns Building on the Chowan University campus. A $3 donation is encouraged. All funds raised will benefit PAWS of Hertford County—bringing hearts together to provide animal welfare and security.
