Chowan Heats Up At CIAA Round-Up

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team started to find their swing at the plate in day one of the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Elizabeth City State picking up a pair of wins against St. Augustine's and Livingstone.

GAME ONE FINAL | Chowan 4, St. Augustine's 2

GAME TWO FINAL | Chowan 11, Livingstone 2 (5 innings)

RECORDS | Chowan 3-15 (2-0), St. Augustine's 0-3 (0-1), Livingstone 0-4 (0-2)

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Miranda Glover went 3-3 in the night cap with a home run and a triple to go with five RBI.  Leah Spiggle picked up two hits.  Beth Walker and Haley Cooper led the Hawks with four hits in the doubleheader.  Cooper hit a home run.

Shannon Buchanan picks up the win in the early game allowing two unearned runs off one hit.  Buchanan struck out a season-high 11 batters.  EmaRae Flores picked up the win against Livingstone allowing two runs off two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 4, St. Augustine's 2

Beth Walker started off the bottom of the first with a single to left center.  Jesse Gentry drew a walk.  After a pop up, Walker and Gentry moved up 60 feet but were left stranded in scoring position.

Hannah Naifeh picked up a single in the second inning and moved to second on a passed ball but was unable to come across to score.

St. Augustine's put two runs on the board in the fourth inning as the lead-off batter singled and swiped second.  The Falcons pushed the run game after a walk to swipe second and third.  After a pair of strikeouts, the Falcons scored two runs on a fielder's choice as an error plated two runs.

Chowan answered in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit in half.  Hannah Naifeh singled with two outs before coming around to score on Donya Salman's single.  An error in the outfield allowed Naifeh to score.

The Hawks took the lead in the fifth inning with three runs to lead 4-2.  Haley Cooper singled before moving to second on a ground out and to third on a passed ball.  Lindsey Stigler would single to left after Jesse Gentry drew a walk to plate Cooper.  Meredith Morgan reached on an error to score two more runs.

CU looked to find their groove in the sixth inning as Leah Spiggle singled to start the inning.  Beth Walker and Jesse Gentry singled to load the bases with one out.  A double play would end the threat.

Shannon Buchanan struck out the side to pick up the win.

Game Two: Chowan 11, Livingstone 2 – five innings

Chowan jumped on the Blue Bears early scoring four runs in the first inning.  Haley Cooper singled to start off the contest.  Cooper would come around to score on Beth Walker's double.  EmaRae Flores picked up a double to score Walker to lead 2-0.  Miranda Glover produced a triple to score Flores.  Leah Spiggle drew a walk before Kerrin Mailhot singled up the middle to lead 4-0.

The Hawks opened up the scoring in the second inning as Haley Cooper doubled to right center.  Beth Walkerdrew a walk.  An error in the inning allowed Cooper to score.  Kelsey Sonntag was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Miranda Glover unloaded the bases with a grand slam.  Leah Spiggle doubled to right center before the Hawks stepped off the bases to end the inning leading 9-0.

Chowan tallied their final two runs of the contest in the third inning as Mikayla Luskin doubled to center.  Haley Cooper would bring home Luskin on a two-run homer.

Livingstone would score twice in the fifth inning as the Hawks took the victory 11-2.
