Chowan Alumni Council celebrates 170 years with Giving Challenge

Oct 2, 2018 by Staff Reports

The Chowan University Alumni Council issued a giving challenge to alumni culminating at Homecoming on October 13th in recognition of the 170th anniversary of the University’s founding, inviting alumni to give to their alma mater in increments of 170.

The challenge encourages alumni to become further engaged with their alma mater and creates awareness of the 170th Homecoming. “We want alumni to celebrate all the ways Chowan has grown since 1848. This challenge helps them become more invested and have a direct impact on the mission to move Chowan forward,” said Kay Thomas, Director of Alumni Relations. “Whether someone gives $17.00 or $1,700.00, they have the chance to come together and make a bigger impact.”

Chowan alumna Debbie Hill made the first gift the same day the Alumni Council issued the challenge, in the amount of $170.00. She was not yet a Council member. In fact, she was attending her first meeting to determine interest and felt compelled to give. She also became more involved and joined the Council.

The excitement surrounding the challenge and the anniversary will unite alumni as they build momentum to support their beloved university. The challenge stemmed from a conversation the Alumni Council had about how to engage alumni. The bulk of the challenge will take place on social media and email to attract young alumni. All gifts to the Annual Fund between now and October 13, will count toward the challenge.

Chowan University Annual Fund Director Nick Khoury said, “We are grateful to the many donors who give throughout the year to support the Annual Fund. This is just one more way alumni and donors can be involved with Chowan.” He continued, “The Annual Fund supports Chowan’s greatest needs and offsets costs for many projects around campus. Each contribution is a personal investment in our future leaders.”

The Challenge builds on collective strength and encourages Chowan alumni to support current students, just as someone once supported them. For more information on the Alumni Challenge or Homecoming, contact Kay Thomas at thomak@chowan.edu or 252-398-6436.
