L. M. Wallace, Jr. Passes Service Set for Saturday, June 17th

Jun 9, 2017 by Staff Reports

Mr. Linyear Mayo (L. M.) Wallace, Jr., age 85, passed away on May 29, 2017, at the Vidant Medical Center of Greenville, NC. L. M. served Chowan as a faculty member in the School of Business from 1958 to 1998. L. M. dedicated his life to education and teaching others what he knew. After serving 25 years at Chowan he was inducted into the Order of Lux et Veritas.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. in the Woodland Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A celebration of life memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church, Woodland, NC, with Dr. J Brabban, officiating.

A native of Beaufort County, L. M. Wallace was born on June 23, 1931, to Fidelia Woolard and Linyear Mayo Wallace, Sr. in Washington, NC. He graduated from Washington High School and served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his service to his country, he attended East Carolina University, earning both Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Business Administration. L. M. married Dorothy Mae Adkins, former Chair of the Chowan University School of Business, in 1968.

During his early years at Chowan, L. M. served as residence director for Mixon Hall, a men’s dormitory, and as the sponsor of the SGA. During his association with the SGA, notable musical groups and guest speakers frequented the campus. The Embers, The Shirelles, Bobby Vinton and Orchestra, Paul Anka and Orchestra, and others performed on campus; and to the delight of students and faculty, David Brinkley and Dan Rather came for speaking engagements in McDowell Columns.

Ever interested in learning and possessing a knack for all things academic, L. M. used his summer vacations for additional graduate studies beyond the master’s degree. Over the years, he earned graduate credits at North Carolina State, Colorado State, and the University of Missouri-Columbia. At the University of Missouri, he enrolled in a Ph.D. program in accounting, an academic field that became his teaching specialty.

L. M. and his loving wife Dorothy moved to Woodland, NC, in 1972. He was active in civic affairs in Woodland and in the surrounding area. He served a term as president of the Woodland Men’s Club and was a member of the Northampton County Historical Society for many years. Until he began experiencing health problems, L. M. served the Woodland Baptist Church as a deacon, choir member, Sunday School teacher for adult men, and chairman of the Finance Committee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chowan University online or by mail (Office of Development, One University Place, Murfreesboro, NC 27855); or to Woodland Baptist Church online or by mail (PO Box 444, Woodland NC 27897); or to a charity of your choice.
