CU Baseball Soars to run-rule Victory over Falcons
PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan University Softball team advanced in the winner's bracket with a 10-0 victory over St. Augustine's in the second game of the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships on Thursday afternoon.

Emily Stafford led the Hawks at the plate with two hits. Kris Neal, Katrina Simmons, and Tina White picked up one hit each. White produced two RBI, while Neal, Stafford and Brook Bowen picked up one RBI each.
Kris Neal and Katrina Simmons tallied an extra base hit with Neal finding the long ball.
Kayla Robins moved to 22-8 on the season pitching the five inning complete game shutout. Robins added 10 strikeouts to move to 332 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Katrina Simmons started off the contest with a double down the left field line. Simmons moved to third on a wild pitch that allowed Brook Bowen to reach via the walk. An illegal pitched brought home the first run of the contest for the Hawks. Bowen would move to third on the steal and later scored swiping home after Haley Cooper's attempted two-base walk garnered a throw.
Chowan would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Kris Neal and Shannon Buchanan drew one out walks to spark the rally. Emily Stafford singled to left center and moved up to second on the throw to bring home Neal. Katrina Simmons drew a walk to load the bases before Brook Bowen was hit by a pitch to score Buchanan. A fielder's choice and a groundout ended the Hawks threat in the second.
Kris Neal added a run in the bottom of the third on a solo blast to center field putting the Hawks up 5-0.
The Hawks extended their lead to 10-0 after they loaded the bases in the fourth inning thanks to a single, hit by pitch and a walk. Danielle Baccus would bring home a run after reaching on a Falcon miscue. Tina White followed up Baccus with a single through the right side to bring home two more runs and moved up to second on another Falcon error. White and Baccus came around to score on the ensuing at-bat after a passed ball got away from the catcher.
St. Augustine's looked to rally back in the top of the fifth picking up two hits with one out. Kayla Robins ended the rally with back-to-back strikeouts.

Chowan continues on in the winner's bracket of the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships. The Hawks will face Fayetteville State in the semi-finals on Friday, May 5 at 12:30pm. The contest will be played on the campus of Virginia State in Ettrick, Va.
