Big Blues Upset by Hawks
STAUNTON, VA- The Chowan University women's tennis team concluded their regular season with a 8-1 win over Bluefield State College on Friday afternoon. The Hawks No. 4 in the Atlantic Region, improve to a 18-8 on the season while the Big Blues No. 6 in the Atlantic Region, slide to 1-12 on the year.
In doubles play, Bluefield grabbed their lone win at the number one doubles when Wendy Rudhu and Laura Hernandez beat Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova 8-6. Chowan's Franca Pacelli and Natalia Andrade recovered in the number two doubles position 8-1 over Kelsi Browning and LeAndrea Armbrister. Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin picked up the victory in the number three doubles by a forfeit from the Big Blues.
The Hawks swepted each of the six singles positions to secure the 8-1 win. At the number one singles match, Novachuk defeated Rudhu 6-2, 6-0 while, Carrier won the second singles match 6-4, 6-2 over Hernandez. Bluefield's Armbrister fell to Gouin 6-0, 6-0 in the number three singles position, while, Makhneva took the 6-2, 6-0 victory in the number four singles to Browning. Roxana Daneshjoo grabbed the fifth singles position for the Blue and White with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maggie Tien. Pacelli earned a victory in the sixth singles play by a forfeit from Bluefield.
The Hawks head to Bowie, Maryland April 21st -23rd to compete in the CIAA Tournament. Additional details will be released as they become available.
