Hawks Pick Up Road Win Over Meredith College
RALEIGH, NC-The Chowan University women's tennis team picked up their first road win of the season over Meredith College in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks advance to 3-2 on the season while the Angels drop to 0-5 overall with the setback.
Chowan swept Meredith in doubles play and singles play during Thursday's match. In the number one doubles play, Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova defeated Cailin Golf and Laura Anne Hatcher 8-1, while Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin took the number two doubles 8-5 for Chowan. The Hawks secured the number three doubles position 8-0 with Anna Makhneva and Roxana Daneshjoo over Emily Wilkinson and Sandra Taranhike.
Heading into singles with a 3-0 lead, Chowan's Novachuk downed Golf 6-0, 6-1 in the number one singles match. Smolchenkova won the number two singles 6-1, 6-2 over Anne Hatcher. The Angels fell in the number three singles play 6-3, 6-1, with Gillian Emerson to Carrier, while Jacqueline Benton dropped the number four position for Meredith 6-0, 6-1, to Gouin. The Hawks picked up the number five singles with a clean 6-0, 6-0, Makhneva over Wilkson, before Daneshjoo defeated Taranhike 6-1, 6-0 for Chowan in the sixth singles position.
The Hawks will hit the court again on Saturday, February 25th as they host Tiffin University, at the Rose Family Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 10:00am.
