Chowan Edged Virginia Union 88-84 in Overtime

Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC-The Chowan University men's basketball team battled to a 88-84 victory over Virginia Union University on Saturday evening. The Hawks matched the Panthers basket-for-basket before securing the 88-84 victory in overtime.

Four of Chowan players scored double digits in the contest. Senior Kevin Kuteyi  paced the Hawks with 21 points and five assists. Tim Hewett added 18 points and grabbed seven boards in the win. Joe Goodwin and Marco Haskins chipped in 17 and 15 buckets respectively.

Marcus Hoosier led the Panthers scoring 22 points, while Ray Anderson added 21 points in the setback. James Paige added 16 points for Virginia Union while John Mitchell grabbed a team high of 11 rebounds.

Chowan trailed 22-29 at the 3:42 minute mark of the first half but quickly came back with a three pointer by Haskins closing the gap 33-32 heading into half time.

The Hawks shot 55% (16-29) from the floor in the second half. Virginia Union shot 61% tying the game 77-77 heading into overtime. A Jumper by Anderson gained the lead for the Panthers in overtime but it was the layup by Kuteyi that secured the final 88-84 victory for Chowan.

The Hawks conclude their regular season with a 18-8 overall record, 14-2 in CIAA play and finish 6-4 in the CIAA Northern Division. The Panthers dropped to 22-6 on the year, 14-2 in the league and in 8-2 divisional play with the setback.

The CIAA will determine the seeding in a conference call on Saturday night. The CIAA will release the official order of finish. Chowan will release the information once it becomes available. The CIAA Tournament Championship will begin Tuesday, February 21st, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
