Hawks Hang on, Edge Shaw 75-72
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team picked up a 75-72 win over Shaw University on Thursday evening. The Hawks improve to 6-2 on the season with the victory and 2-0 in league play. The Bears slip to 4-4- overall and 1-1 against CIAA opponents with the setback.
Benji Bell led all players in the game with 24 points in the setback. Larry Richardson added 18 points in the loss with DeAaron Ward recording eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive).
Kevin Kuteyi paced the Hawks with 22 points in the win. Carlos Arroyo added 15 points with Joe Goodwin chipping in 13 points and 10 rebounds (six offensive, four defensive). Jeremy Smith rounded out the double-digit performers with 12 points and 12 rebounds (six offensive, six defensive).
The Hawks jumped to a quick 10-4 lead at the start of the first half and extended their advantage to 17-6 at the 14:14 mark after a three-pointer by Marco Haskins. Chowan led by as many as 16 points (24-8) at the 11:14 mark before closing out the first half with a comfortable 39-27 advantage.
Richardson opened the second half with a three-pointer for Shaw. From there, the Bears methodically chipped away at the deficit. With 12:34 on the clock, Ward's layup left Chowan clinging to a 48-47 lead. The Hawks survived five ties in the second half before Smith's bucket with 35 seconds left in the game pushed Chowan ahead 71-69. The Bears were unable to overcome the shift in momentum. Kuteyi's free throw with four seconds left in the game pushed Chowan ahead 75-69. Richardson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for Shaw, but the Hawks secured the 75-72 victory.
Chowan returns to action on Saturday when the Hawks play host to Saint Augustine's University. Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
