Hawks Hold off Patriots in Tale of Two Halves
Box Score FLORENCE, SC- The Chowan University women's basketball team grabbed a 70-65 win over Francis Marion University on the road on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 3-0 win the victory while the Patriots slide to 1-2 with the setback.
Jordan Payne recorded her third consecutive double-double for Chowan on Wednesday. She grabbed a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds (three offensive, eight defensive) in the win. Dhyamond Crenshaw added 11 points with Courtni Williams notching 10 points for the Hawks. Chantel Roberts tallied eight points and nine rebounds (two offensive, seven defensive) to aid the effort.
Khai Chandler led all players in the contest with 16 points followed by Briana Burgins with 15 points. TeTe Flowers notched 12 points in the setback with Shaunice Fulmore tallying 11 points.
Flowers opened the contest with a layup, giving Francis Marion an early edge. The Patriots led 8-0 midway through the first quarter before Crenshaw's jumper put the Hawks on the board. After trailing 14-4 with 3:30 remaining, Chowan clawed their way back to pull within three points (17-14) by the end of the first quarter.
The Hawks fought to stay within striking distance after the first ten minutes of play, but a free throw by Flowers with 5:03 on the clock left Chowan trailing 24-17. Down 26-17, the Hawks orchestrated a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two points (26-24). The late rally was not enough as Francis Marion pulled away 31-27 by the halftime break after a free throw by Burgins.
Chowan refused to back down and persistently chipped away at the deficit at the start of the third quarter. Trailing 36-29, a layup by Williams with 7:05 on the clock led to an 11-3 run for the Hawks and handed Chowan a narrow 40-39 lead. With the Hawks holding a 42-41 advantage with 1:15 left to play, Chowan capitalized on a 6-1 run down the final stretch of the third quarter to take a 47-43 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.
The last quarter was all about the Hawks as Chowan built their lead to as many as nine points (61-52) before closing out the contest with the 70-65 victory.
The team returns to action on November 19th when Chowan travels to compete against Benedict College. Tip-off is slated for 4pm on the Elizabeth City State University campus.
