Hawks Outlast Claflin in Five Set Thriller
Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC- The Chowan University volleyball team edged Claflin University 3-2 in non-conference play on Wednesday evening. The Hawks improve to 19-8 overall with the victory while the Panthers slide to 12-6 on the season with the loss.
Chowan topped Claflin 25-11 in set one before falling to the Panthers 25-23 in set two. The Hawks recovered for a 27-25 set three victory, but came up short in a 25-23 decision in set four to force a fifth and final set. Chowan outlasted Claflin in the deciding set, earning a 15-9 victory to secure the match win.
Suraya Chase led all players in the match with 20 kills for Chowan. She also recorded 18 digs in the victory. Morgan Spencer added 14 kills for the Hawks with Karisa Patterson notching 32 assists. Alyssa Born notched 17 assists with Bailey Zavala collecting 25 digs.
Bria Bronston paced the Panthers with 16 kills in the loss. Jordan Wallace totaled 10 kills on the evening with Jhi Piper-Murles grabbing 24 digs.
In the opening set, Chowan jumped to a quick 9-4 advantage. The Hawks held an advantage of four or more points for the remainder of the set before securing the 25-11 victory after a Panther attack error.
With the score tied 9-9 in set two, a kill by Jamie Dobson followed by a Chowan error left the Hawks trailing 11-9. Claflin held onto the advantage until a Panther attack error handed the Hawks a narrow 15-14 edge midway through the set. With the score knotted 22-22, the Hawks managed to score one additional point in set two before falling to Claflin 25-23.
The Hawks and Panthers battled through set three with neither team managing to establish firm control of the momentum. With the score tied 25-25, kills by Sydney Miller and Spencer solidified the 27-25 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
Chowan maintained a lead of two or more points through the majority of set four. The Panthers refused to back down and used a kill by Rosales to knot the score 20-20. With the score tied 23-23, a kill by Wallace followed by a Chowan attack error gave the Panthers all they would need to secure the 25-23 victory.
The Hawks established control of the momentum early in set five and never looked back. Chowan closed out the set with a kill by Spencer, earning the 15-9 win.
Chowan returns to action on Thursday when the Hawks travel to take on St. Andrews University on Thursday. Match time is slated for 6pm.
