Hawks Dominate Opening Day of Play at CIAA Round-Up

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team posted a 2-0 record on the opening day of play at the CIAA Round-Up on Saturday.  The Hawks downed Livingstone College 3-0 in the first match of the day and followed with a 3-0 win over Johnson C. Smith University.  The Hawks improve to 10-6 overall and post a 7-1 mark in CIAA play.  Chowan has posted victories in eight of their last nine matches. 

In the opening match, the Hawks made quick work of Livingstone College.  Chowan picked up 25-11, 25-16, and 25-14 set matches to cruise to a 3-0 victory.  Morgan Spencercollected a match-high 11 kills in the win while Suraya Chase and Sydney Miller each tallied 10 kills in the match.  Caitlin Turner handed out 25 assists while Bailey Zavalanotched 12 digs. 

Jekisha Rhymes and Endea Woodle each tallied four kills for the Lady Blue Bears.  Stevee Cotton dished out seven assists while Shantell Billups notched nine digs.

Chowan trailed 3-0 early in the opening set before responding with a 6-0 run to take the lead.  The Hawks held onto the momentum for the remainder of the set, and secured the 25-11 opening victory behind a 6-0 run at the conclusion of set one. 

The Hawks jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the start of the second set.  Holding a 14-11 advantage midway through set two, a trio of kills along with two service aces by Makayla Castro and a Livingstone error pushed Chowan ahead 20-11.  The Lady Blue Bears were unable to overcome the deficit, and the Hawks easily grabbed the 25-16 set two win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Chowan continued the momentum in the final set against Livingstone.  After racing to a 7-0 lead behind Turner's serves at the start, the Hawks built their lead to as many as 13 points (20-7) before closing out the 25-14 win using a kill by Miller. 

In the second match of the day, the Hawks defeated the Golden Bulls 25-11, 25-10, and 25-13 to earn a 3-0 win over Johnson C. Smith.  Spencer led the effort for the Hawks with 10 kills in the contest.  Chase notched five kills while Turner handed out 11 assists. 

Makayla Adams posted a team-high five kills for Johnson C. Smith with Azha McNeil recorded 11 assists. 

With the score tied 2-2 in the opening set, the Hawks capitalized on a 12-2 run to take a commanding 14-4 lead early in the contest.  Chowan maintained a firm grip on the momentum and closed out the set with a 3-0 run behind Courtney O'Keefe's serves to secure the 25-11 win. 

Chowan came out firing in the second set after racing to a 3-0 lead.  The Hawks clung to a 5-2 advantage over Johnson C. Smith before scoring 15 unanswered points behind Zavala's serves.  The Golden Bulls were unable to recover from the deficit, and the Hawks easily claimed the 25-10 set two win using a kill by O'Keefe. 

Johnson C. Smith took an early lead in the third set.  Chowan fought back from the deficit and pulled within two points (9-7) after a kill by Bell.   Using a series of runs, the Hawks took the advantage for good midway through the set and never looked back, confirming the 25-13 victory after a Golden Bull attack error. 

The Hawks conclude play at the CIAA Round-Up on Sunday as Chowan takes on the defending CIAA Champion, Winston-Salem State University.  First serve  is slated for 11am.
