Hawks Sweep Shepherd Rams in Season Opener
MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University women's tennis team swept Shepherd University on Saturday morning in their first dual match of the season. With the win the Hawks start off the season with a 1-0 overall record, while the Rams post a 0-1 overall record after the loss.
The doubles duo of Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin earned an 8-2 victory in the number one doubles position over Molly Lovern and Zoe Nicewander. Polina Novachukand Victoria Smolchenkova took an 8-4 win over Alisha Adkins and Zoie O'Neal at the number two position, while Roxana Daneshjoo and Franca Pacelli also won by a score of 8-4 in the number three position bringing the team score to 3-0 after doubles.
In singles play, the Hawks picked up six victories to secure the 9-0 win. In the number one position, Novachuk defeated Adkins 6-1, 6-2 while Smolchenkova took down Lovern by a score of 6-0, 6-1. In the third position, Carrier swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Gouin earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nicewander in the number four spot, while at the number five position Anna Makhneva defeated Anna Bock 6-2, 6-0. The Hawks' final singles win was earned by Daneshjoo who earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicolette Bruley in the number six singles position.
The Hawks return to action on October 1st when they host the Chowan 2-of-3 Tennis Challenge at the Rose Family Tennis Complex.
