Monsters Coming to Chowan

Apr 15, 2016 by Staff Reports

The theme for the twelfth annual Faculty Interdisciplinary Symposium is “Monsters and the Monstrous.” Thirty-five Chowan faculty members will make presentations. The symposium, which is sponsored by the Department of History and the Office of the Provost, is scheduled for Monday, April 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Marks Hall. Dr. W. Scott Poole, Professor of History at the College of Charleston, will deliver the keynote lecture in Vaughan Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. The title of Poole’s lecture is “’The Pleasure of Horror’: Monsters and the Question of Evil.” Poole has authored several monographs, including Monsters in America; Our Historical Obsession with the Hideous and the Haunting, Satan in America: The Devil We Know, and Vampira: Dark Goddess of Horror. The symposium was organized in response to a call for greater interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration among faculty and the importance of demonstrating to students the connections among various disciplines in their education curriculum. The symposium is based on the premise that if students have an opportunity to see that their course work is inherently linked and that what they learn in one class can be transferred to another, then their education might seem purposeful. Past themes include “The World of Mark Twain,” War and Society,” “The American South,” “Exploring the Environment,” “A Sense of Place,” “Talking About Revolution,” “A Pop Culture Society,” “From Field to Table: A Foodways Journey,” “Thinking Gender,” and “Futures: Past and Present.”
