Christmas at Chowan Concert and Tree Lighting

Nov 21, 2014 by Staff Reports

Chowan University’s Department of Music will present its annual Christmas at Chowan concert featuring a wide range of modern and classic Christmas favorites on Sunday, December 7th at 4:30 pm in Turner Auditorium.

You are invited for an afternoon of music that will include a variety of styles from the Nigerian carol “Betelehemu,” to the 19th century English carol “What Child Is This?” to the 1950s novelty song “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.” There will be something in this program to delight anyone.

The concert will include the Chowan Winds, the Woodwind Ensemble, the Jazz Combo, the Chowan University Men’s Choir, and the Chowan Singers.

Also, as is the Chowan tradition, a Mystery Guest Reader will gather the children at the front of the auditorium for a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’.

The concert is free and open to the public. Following the concert, guests are invited to follow the luminaries to the Camp President’s House for the lighting of Chowan’s official Christmas tree.

Chowan University will continue its new Christmas tree lighting tradition immediately following the concert. Audience members will be invited to stroll the luminary-lined walk from the historic McDowell Columns Building to the President’s Home for the lighting of the University Christmas Tree. Following the brief tree lighting ceremony, hot cider will be served.

Admission to the concert is free. The doors to Turner Auditorium will open for seating at 4:00 pm.
