Sam Hughes: Dual Art Exhibits

Professional photographer, artist, and educator, Sam Hughes, will be exhibiting two bodies of work in Chowan University’s Art Galleries in Green Hall: “State of the Child” and “Happenstance Part Two” from Thursday, November 10th at 5pm through Thursday, December 8th.

In the main gallery, “State of the Child” provides potent imagery that sheds light on the burdens that society places on children, raising questions about how this affects their abilities to express themselves.  In the gallery annex, “Happenstance Part Two” focuses on Sam’s investigation into technical ‘accidents’ created during the photographic process. These anomalies aesthetically merge with arcane, quirky, and abstract subject matter, creating works of art that are uniquely photographic.

Sam Hughes is originally from Laurel, Mississippi.  He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, graduating with a photojournalism degree in 1987. After working as a photojournalist for newspapers and magazines throughout the south, Hughes moved to the Pacific Northwest, specifically Portland, Oregon, in 1997, where he continued his photojournalism career. In 2002, he moved to the Coastal Virginia area, where he began a successful photography business and soon after, began teaching as an adjunct instructor for Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center, teaching photography. Several years later, Hughes began his studies at Norfolk State University, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in May, 2012. In the fall of 2013, he joined the faculty as an assistant professor at Norfolk State University's Division of Fine Arts, where he currently teaches photography and graphic design.

The opening reception will be November 10th from 5 pm to 7 pm with light refreshments. Join Chowan as they welcome Sam Hughes’ work to the Green Hall Art Gallery.
