Hawks Blank Bowie State
Box Score BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University volleyball team toppled Bowie State University 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in league play with the win while the Lady Bulldogs slide to 0-7 overall and 0-5 against CIAA opponents with the setback. Chowan remains perfect in CIAA Northern Division play with a 2-0 mark.
The Hawks defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-13 in sets one and two before earning a 25-9 victory in set three. Morgan Spencer led all players in the match with eight kills while Emalie Hicks and Suraya Chase each picked up five kills for the Chowan Blue and White. Karisa Patterson dished out 16 assists followed by Caitlin Turner with 10 assists. Bailey Zavala notched 13 digs in the win for the Hawks.
Breiona Garrison tallied six kills for Bowie State. Cheyenne Salter notched seven assists while Amy Harvey collected 10 digs.
In the opening set of the afternoon, the Hawks raced to a 5-0 lead to gain the momentum early in the contest. After taking the early advantage, Chowan used a series of runs to put the match out of reach. The Hawks led 20-9 after a 5-0 run midway through the opening set and secured the 25-13 victory behind another 5-0 run and kill by Courtney O'Keefe.
Chowan continued to build on the momentum in the second set after rolling to a 10-2 advantage at the start. The Lady Bulldogs pulled within four points (14-10) midway through set two, but the Hawks outscored Bowie State 11-3 down the final stretch of the second set to earn the 25-13 victory.
Bowie State grabbed an early 2-0 advantage in the final set, but the Hawks took advantage of a trio of Lady Bulldog errors and a kill from Syndey Miller to pull away 4-2. Chowan held on to a 15-8 lead before a kill by Chase sparked a 5-0 run, leaving Bowie State trailing 20-8. A Hawk service error gave Bowie State an additional point, but a kill by Miller, Lady Bulldog error, and three consecutive service aces by Patterson secured the 25-9 win for the Hawks.
Chowan returns to action on Monday as the Hawks travel to take on Lincoln University (PA) in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Match time is slated for 6pm.
