Chowan University Inducts Nineteen Members into Alpha Chi National Honor Society
On the 27th of October 2022, Chowan University inducted nineteen students into the North Carolina Phi Chapter of Alpha Chi. Vaughan Auditorium facilitated the well-attended twenty-sixth annual induction ceremony, which saw a student-led presentation accompanied by the 2021-2022 Alpha Chi Teacher of the Year, Jason Fowler.
Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society. Since 1992, its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among colleges and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. The name of the organization is derived from the Greek words meaning truth and character. As a general honor society, Alpha Chi admits to membership students from all academic disciplines. Along with Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Chi is one of the most prestigious and widely recognized honor societies in the nation.
To be tapped for membership in the North Carolina Phi Chapter of Alpha Chi at Chowan University, a student must have successfully completed 24 hours of class credit at Chowan, earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and ranked within the top 10 percent of the junior and senior class combined.
The order of the evening began with the Presentation of the Symbols by Alpha Chi officers Cristina Flores (Vice President), Annery Abreu (Co-President), and Olivia Wheeler (Co-President). Adasia Boone (Secretary) and Jordan Shumake (Social Media) took the Invocation and Welcome before Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Jason Fowler delivered his speech, “It is an Honor.” Following on, Marin Knepper (Voting Delegate) and Heidi Jensen (Social Media) took control of the lighting of the ceremonial candles. The official induction of members was presented by Elijah Brown (Service Chair), as members were pinned by their Faculty Mentors and given a certificate of acceptance by Provost Moore. Alpha Chi member Rachel Van Buren played “Hail to Alpha Chi” on the piano to close the ceremony.
