Welcome to the Department of General Education

The Department of General Education provides foundational courses that support Chowan University’s distinctive educational experience by developing life skills and academic competencies necessary for success. These courses help students build essential abilities, such as effective written and oral communication, mathematical skills, critical thinking, and the evaluation of sources. Students engage with the humanities and social sciences, developing important habits of mind like curiosity, creativity, and flexibility. They also learn to empathize with the experiences of others and learn to communicate their own ideas in clear and convincing ways.

The Department of General Education also offers degree programs that allow students to develop personalized majors devoted to their individual interests and skills. These include degrees in Social Science, General Studies, and Integrative Studies. Students in these majors have the advantage of combining knowledge and methodologies from more than one discipline to gain deeper understanding of the world and prepare for specialized careers in a variety of fields.

Integrative Studies provides students with the opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary program that is not offered as part of the university curriculum.
