Service and Spirit Shine at Chowan: Students Lead Through Learning and Community Connection
MURFREESBORO, N.C. — October 22, 2025 — At Chowan University, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through a renewed focus on service, community engagement, and student involvement, Chowan is shaping a new generation of servant-leaders ready to make a difference both on campus and across the region.
This fall, the university’s reimagined “Chowan Experience” course has become the foundation of that mission. Designed to help students transition into college life while building purpose and connection, the course now incorporates service-learning opportunities.
“Service is part of who we are at Chowan,” said Hannah Rose, Career Development Coordinator and NC Campus Engagement Liaison. “Our students are finding that leadership begins with showing up — for their neighbors, their classmates, and their community.”
That spirit of service is taking center stage at the upcoming Hometown Market, hosted at Squirrel Park on Saturday, November 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. A first-of-its-kind event, the Hometown Market invites local artisans, student makers, small businesses, food vendors, and nonprofits to connect directly with students and residents alike. The event reflects Chowan’s partnership with NC Campus Engagement, a statewide coalition that supports colleges in building civic and community engagement opportunities for students.
“The Hometown Market is more than an event — it’s a way to bridge campus and community,” Rose shared. “Our students get to see the impact of supporting local businesses and using their talents in meaningful ways.”
Throughout the semester, students have also found creative ways to connect and serve through campus life activities. From line dancing and karaoke nights to Hawks Night Out events in collaboration with downtown Murfreesboro businesses, engagement is thriving. Even the friendly kickball tournament and vibrant Greek Life initiatives echo the same message: building relationships and serving others is central to the Chowan experience.
As Chowan continues to grow its partnership with NC Campus Engagement, the university is strengthening its commitment to experiential learning — where service, leadership, and education come together. Whether it’s hosting a community market or helping a classmate succeed, Chowan students are learning that the most powerful lessons often happen when they give back.
