Student Spotlight: From Curiosity to Criminal Justice — Haley Jensen’s Chowan Journey

Jun 11, 2025 by Catherine Vickers

When Haley Jensen first arrived at Chowan University, she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Following in her sister Heidi’s footsteps and encouraged by her mother to give college a try, Haley came to campus with a mix of scholarships in hand—Presidential, music, and softball—and a sense of curiosity about her future.

“I thought about just going straight into the workforce after high school,” Haley recalls. “But my mom encouraged me to go to college to grow as a person. I’m so glad I listened.”

Now a proud graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice, Haley reflects on her Chowan experience with gratitude. She served as president of the Criminal Justice Club, leading with energy and purpose alongside co-president Carly Brewer. Their leadership helped the club thrive and earned it the university’s Mission and Vision Award, given to the club that best reflects Chowan’s values and makes a positive impact on campus.

Haley’s interest in criminal justice began in high school during a forensic science class, sparking a passion to help others. While her sister Heidi pursued a path in healthcare, Haley was drawn to the justice system and the opportunity to serve in a different way.

With aspirations of becoming a crime scene investigator, Haley is undeterred by entering a field that remains male-dominated. Confident and determined, she embraces the unique perspective she brings to the profession.

Her next step after graduation includes a six-month internship assisting a politician at the Capitol building in Denver, a role that may lead to full-time employment. Staying close to family is important to Haley, and she plans to continue her career search in northern Colorado—a place she still calls home.

Haley credits Chowan with preparing her to confidently take this next step. She built lasting friendships, leadership experience, and even found her partner while on campus. The opportunity to grow in a different culture and environment has left a lasting mark.

With a passion for justice, a strong sense of purpose, and the support of her family behind her, Haley Jensen is ready for all that lies ahead.
