Student Spotlight: Danea Mackey
Danea Mackey, graduating with a business degree and a concentration in marketing, has achieved many milestones during her time at Chowan University—but perhaps none more proudly than serving as one of the captains of the Women’s Basketball team.
Mackey transferred to Chowan in her junior year from Daytona State College, a two-year institution in Florida. Since, she has made a lasting impact both on and off the court. She takes great pride in her team, which finished the season with an impressive 19-6 record.
“We knew from the start that this team was special,” Mackey reflects. “Everyone bought into the vision. We faced a lot this season—obstacles, setbacks, even our coach taking maternity leave—but we never lost focus. We turned every challenge into motivation.”
Turning obstacles into opportunities is a philosophy that defines Mackey’s life. Although basketball once felt like a constraint, tethering her to a demanding schedule, it has now become her passport to the world. After graduation, Mackey has received an offer to continue her athletic career in Italy for Rome City Institute where she could also earn an MBA—a dream that combines her passion for athletics and business.
Beyond athletics, Mackey is a driven entrepreneur. In high school, she founded Dynamically Made, a company aimed at inspiring and motivating others through the power of synergy and positive action. “One of my proudest moments came the summer after my sophomore year,” she says. “I organized a basketball camp for around 200 youth, ages five to twenty-four, on the campus of Ghana University. It was life-changing and reminded me why I do what I do.”
Mackey credits her entrepreneurial spirit to her father, a business owner, and the values instilled in her from an early age.
Though she grew up near a bustling city, Mackey admits that Chowan’s close-knit community has profoundly influenced her. “Being in a quieter place gave me space to reflect,” she shares. “The kindness here is something I’ve really appreciated. Everyone pushes you toward greatness and supports you every step of the way.”
As she prepares for the next chapter, Mackey carries with her a legacy of leadership, perseverance, and community spirit.
