Chowan’s Daylan Askew Named Player of the Year, Cheick Traore Earns All-Defensive Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas announced the men’s basketball awards prior to Thursday’s quarterfinals of the 2025 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship.

The 2024-25 all-conference awards were chosen by the league’s head coaches.

Daylan Askew of Chowan University was selected Conference Carolinas Player of the Year, becoming the first Hawk to earn the distinction. The senior leads Conference Carolinas and ranks 12th in NCAA Division II with an average of 22.2 points per game. He ranks fifth in the league with 189 field goals, posting a 47.1 field goal percentage. His 78 three-point makes rank fourth in the league as he shoots 42.6 percent from long range. Askew also ranks third in the conference, shooting 81.7 percent from the free throw line.

He has been a facilitator for the Hawks as well, handing out 3.5 assists per game to rank third in the league. He has scored at least 20 points in a game 17 times, including seven contests with at least 30 points. His season-high of 35 came on December 1 against Augusta University.

Cheick Traore was recognized on the Conference Carolinas All-Defensive Team for his exceptional performance throughout the season. Traore has accumulated 121 points, 26 blocks, and 173 rebounds this year. He ranks 8th in the conference in rebounding, averaging 6.9 boards per game, and is 5th in blocked shots, with an average of one block per game.

Elijah Cobb of UNC Pembroke becomes the second player in league history to be selected Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. The last time was Jamaal Martin of the University of Mount Olive in 2017-18 and 2018-19. A Brave has won this award three of the last four years with Spencer Levi taking the honors in 2021-22.

Cobb, a senior ranked sixth in Conference Carolinas with an average of 7.2 rebounds per game. He also posted 24 blocks, ranking him eighth in the league.

Mount Olive’s Chase Dawson was selected Freshman of the Year, becoming the fifth Trojan to earn the honor and first since 2018-19. Dawson ranked near the top of the league in numerous categories, including 223 made field goals, a mark that ranks 14th in NCAA Division II and second in the league. His average of 21.4 points per game ranks third in Conference Carolinas as he is one of three players in the league to average at least 20 points per game. His 599 total points ranks second in the league.

Dawson was selected Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Month three times this season and posted 18 games with at least 20 points, including two over 30. His career-high of 38 came on February 24 against Barton. He currently ranks second the league with an 82.9 free throw percentage and ranks 10th in the league with a 51.1 field goal percentage.

Emmanuel University’s TJ Rosene was selected Coach of the Year for the third time, the others coming in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Rosene guided the Lions to a 20-8 overall record, going 18-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Emmanuel went 8-0 two win the Southwest Division as the Lions earned the second seed in 2025 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship.

The men’s quarterfinals tipoff on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. before the semifinals on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. The championship contest is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships will also feature the Spirit Championships for the third consecutive year, which includes being held in the main arena of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for the second straight year. The Spirit Championships are scheduled for the morning of Saturday, March 8.
