
Hawks Soar to No. 8 in D2CSC Polls, Leading the Nation in Three Defensive Categories
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – After receiving votes last week, the Hawks have soared to the No. 8 spot in the D2CSC Women’s Basketball Polls for Week 10. They hold an 11-2 overall record and an 8-2 Conference Carolinas record.
Chowan is leading the nation in NCAA Division II for both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 44.5 points per game and a 31.6% shooting from the field. The Hawks’ defense stood out in their 55-36 victory over #21 Belmont Abbey, a tightly contested, low-scoring game where their defense dominated. Belmont Abbey, ranked No. 3 in scoring defense, allows an average of 48.4 points per game.
CU women’s basketball is also ranked No. 1 in rebound margin among NCAA Division II teams. The Hawks boast a rebound margin of 18.2, dominating the glass by out rebounding opponents by an average of 18.2 boards per game.
Nyeisha Savage is currently leading Conference Carolinas in blocked shots, with 18 blocks over 10 games, averaging 1.8 blocks per game. Yasmine Brown leads the Hawks in scoring, averaging 11.1 points per game. Senior Meara Carter leads the Hawks in rebounds with 98 total, including 68 defensive and 30 offensive.
The Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, January 29th, facing off against Francis Marion inside the Hawks Athletic Center at 5:00 PM. With both teams boasting an 8-2 conference record, this game is crucial, as Chowan sits at No. 2 in the Conference Carolinas East Division, while Francis Marion follows closely at No. 3.
