Chowan University Donates 2,300 Backpacks to Hertford County Schools
Shelley Greene, Vice President for Enrollment and Advancement at Chowan University, understands the importance of giving back to the community, especially when it comes to supporting local children. When Hertford County School District sent out a request in Murfreesboro and Ahoskie asking if anyone could donate a handful of backpacks for their children, Dr. Greene jumped at the opportunity. 2300 students have clear backpacks, mandated for safety reasons by the district and donated by Chowan University. “I want to show the children that college is within their reach, and most importantly, that we’ll be there to support them every step of the way.” Kindergarten students through seniors in high school are wearing a backpack with Chowan University and Hertford County logos side by side, symbolizing the strong and growing partnership between the two institutions.
Chowan University is happy they can help Hertford County Public School Schools with their mission of fostering “a safe, nurturing environment that serves all students and families through quality education, diversity, and innovative opportunities, ensuring graduates are globally competitive and equipped for success.”
Dr. Jesse J. Pratt, Superintendent of HCPS, expressed his deep gratitude to Chowan University for this thoughtful gesture. “Our partnership with Chowan is growing stronger, and we appreciate their ongoing support for our students. These backpacks are more than just school supplies; they represent the collaboration and shared commitment to the success of our students,”
Dr. Rosemary Thomas, President of Chowan University, emphasized the university’s dedication to the local school system. “At Chowan University, we are dedicated to supporting our local school system and its students. Providing new backpacks to all 2,300 Hertford County Public School students is one way we can show our commitment to their success and well-being. We are proud to contribute to this initiative and invest in the future of our community’s children,” remarked Dr. Thomas.
We eagerly anticipate more collaborations in the future, as this partnership will continue to enrich the lives of our students and Hertford County.
