Student Life: Student Activities

Take a look at the Chowan University Viewbook! - Click Here

Chowan University offers many things to do when students aren't in the classroom. Whether it's fishing on Lake Vann, watching movies in Squirrel Park, or just relaxing under a shady oak tree, CU students have many options.

Let the games begin. From Texas Hold 'em, Spades, and Casino Night to Deal or no Deal and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, students have something to do every night.

Surf's up. Chowan University is the closest Christian university to the Atlantic Ocean.

It takes only about an hour to get to Virginia Beach to enjoy the sights.

Many students go to the Outer Banks, only 90 minutes away, to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey's Ridge State Park.

It's easy for students to take a day trip to the beach to have fun in the sun and work on their tan.

Come see the show. Students interested in music enjoy coming to the many performances at Chowan.

Shows are given by the orchestra, the music department, and people from the community. Many people also love listening to the Gospel Choir.

Art-lovers visit the Art Gallery to see paintings, drawings, and sculptures from students, faculty, and staff.

Chowan's drama club, the Chowan Players, gives many performances throughout the year.

Theatre@Chowan productions have presented plays such as The Glass Menagerie, Baby with the Bathwater, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner to name a few.

Students also go to the Gallery Theatre in Ahoskie.

Helping out. Chowan students give back to the community in countless ways and have fun in the process.

Several students offer after-school tutoring to children in the area, and many students participate in Relay for Life to help find a cure for cancer.

Habitat for Humanity gets Chowan students to help build homes for the less fortunate, and students join the Rotaract Club to provide service to the community.

Just down the road is the beach: Virginia Beech, Nags Head, and the rest of the Outer Banks.

Plus, the communities surrounding Chowan offer many activities too.

Students can take a look at Historic Murfreesboro or visit the Brady C. Jefcoat Museum.

Several festivals and events take place every year in Murfreesboro such as the Roanoke-Chowan Pork Fest, Candlelight Christmas Tour, and the Watermelon Festival.

The nearby town of Ahoskie offers the Heritage Day festival and the Meherrin Indian Pow-Wow.

Norfolk, VA and Greenville, NC both have large malls that shoppers love.

Roanoke Rapids, a little less than an hour away, is home to Carolina Crossroads, where big country artists perform. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre holds many rock concerts and the Warped Tour.

With so many choices at Chowan, students have no problem finding something to do.
