The following true statements are from actual students, faculty and staff currently attending or working with Chowan University.
"At first, I wanted to go to a large school, but I wanted to be more of a name and not just a number. I liked how I came to visit three times before I decided to come here, and the second time I was here people already knew my name to my face. That was the big thing that attracted me here." - Jason Villegas, freshman from Colorado Springs, Colorado
"I found the academics at Chowan are really great. These teachers are so awesome. The History department is great, the English department is phenomenal, my Religion department is of course the best. The Graphic Communications students refer to the secretary of that department as their Chowan mom, they love it."
- Jennyfer Fredette, senior from Boston, Massachusetts
"You become close, bond together like family. We look out for each other, pray for each other. You get along with a lot of people here, and the teachers are great. You have that one on one cooperation with them."
- JaMel Dean, sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia
"It's a small atmosphere, sure, but that's what adds to it. They should be saying, 'It's a small atmosphere but so many big things happen here.' For example, there are so many organizations. Ever since the Chowan Hockey League came out, people see how easily it can happen, that you yourself can make stuff happen and that Chowan will help you. You don't need an act of Congress to get something started. That's what is so fortunate about this school. The CHL has set an example for everybody else, and so now, we have a huge increase in clubs and organizations. There are so many big things going on here on this small campus- that's what makes Chowan what it is."
- Lance Jenkins, sophomore from Jackson, North Carolina
"There are a lot of things to do on campus. We have a movie night every week, there are different sports games going on all the time, and we have game nights with card games and casino games and prizes if you win."
- Helen Anninos, freshman from Chesapeake, Virginia
"You really don't have to worry about making any bad decisions. It's my kind of fun, the kind where you just laugh with your friends and they will laugh with you."
- Josh Brown, senior from Pink Hill, North Carolina
"Out of the three grad school classes I sat in at [a big Southern Ivy League school], I said I already did all of this at Chowan. Either I have extraordinary professors at Chowan, or there is something wrong with [a big Southern Ivy League school]."
- Jennyfer Fredette, senior from Boston, Massachusetts
"I had a lot of different schools that I was choosing from. I got accepted to eight different ones. I really didn't like the feel of the other Christian schools in the area. The main reason why I came to Chowan was for the religion program. I felt like God was calling me here."
- Jason Villegas, freshman from Colorado Springs, Colorado
"I am a history major, and I have a great time with the history professors. Now, we all know when it is time to be serious, but at the same time, we can joke and have a good time outside of class, too."
- Lance Jenkins, sophomore from Jackson, North Carolina
"I was going to go to another Christian school, but I contacted Dr. Brabban (religion and philosophy professor) at Chowan, and it just really seemed like the right fit, I really feel a calling to be at Chowan."
- Josh Brown, senior from Pink Hill, North Carolina
"With the study abroad programs, I've been to Greece and Turkey, and Israel and Egypt. I have never really traveled before I came to Chowan, and next I'm headed to Italy. It's an amazing experience."
- Jennyfer Fredette, senior from Boston, Massachusetts
"Last May, we went to Israel and Egypt for 10 days with Dr. White and a group of some other faculty and friends. That was a blast! We actually went inside the medium-sized pyramid at Giza, and I have a picture of me on top of the big one, and in Jericho, I rode a camel. That was the coolest journey I've ever taken."
- Josh Brown, senior from Pink Hill, North Carolina
"To me, Chowan University is an ideal place to learn because you can kick back with friends and a burger in the Hawks Nest, shoot some hoops in the Jenkins Center, delve into a good book in the library, or take a casual stroll across squirrel park. Our cozy campus is a great place to find friends, discover your potential, and define your future."
- Steven Harders,
Assistant Professor of Communication and Drama
"I fell in love Chowan upon my arrival several years ago. Since then, I already have memories to last me a lifetime-dogwoods blooming on a warm April morning, graduates lined up in their caps and gowns, students walking through Squirrel Park on cool autumn days, those majestic white columns adorning the administration building. 'If you have to fall in love with something," Robert Frost wrote, "you can do a lot worse than a college.' I can't agree more."
- Danny B. Moore,
Provost,
Professor of History,
Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs
"Having taught at and attended large Midwest colleges and universities, the cultural differences at Chowan have made a significant impact on my philosophy of education. It is a very wonderful experience when you walk across our campus and students feel comfortable stopping to converse with instructors on topics that range from their academia experience to just the simple philosophy of the weather. It is also an enjoyable experience in the smaller class sizes so that I get to know my students. Because of this, I am able to work with each student on a more one-on-one basis. I have experienced that when students know that an instructor cares for them as a whole individual, they strive to achieve higher expectations."
- EuGene Van Roy, Instructor of Graphic Communications
"The cool thing about Chowan is that it has a great deal of pride. People are just amazingly devoted to this school, and I think that is one of the things that speaks volumes about Chowan. So many people just love it, they bleed blue."
- Dr. Kirk Peterson, Associate Provost, Department of Sport Studies and Physical Education, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of the School of Education
"We have some really good kids, you really believe in what they are doing and what they want to do with their lives. It's exciting to be part of that and see where they go."
- Dr. Larry Frazier, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Chairman of Interdisciplinary Studies
"This is an investment for the future, in the hopes their sons and daughters will take that opportunity and be successful in life. There are options, even when many of them walk onto campus thinking that this is unaffordable. It's rewarding to help them see that there are types of opportunities to work with."
- Stephanie Harrell, Director of Financial Aid
"The fact that we got 30 students every year eligible for the Freshman Honor Society, for our size of institution, apparently has even impressed the national office. We received an award for tremendous growth."
- Dr. Danny Moore, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, History Professor
"Campus ministry provides an opportunity for students to explore leadership through worship and service above and beyond the campus."
- Rev. Mari Wiles, Minister to the University
"We're letting churches know that we are here to help them in whatever way we can. We've had many responses, especially for the choir to come and sing to the churches. I had a pastor call this morning, he's going to be out of town, and he asked if we could get a student to come and speak."
- Rev. Ronald McSwain, Director of Church Relations
"I build strong relationships with the students because we deal with not just academic issues, but personal and church work, ministry. the big issues. It's quite a personal investment in each student."
- Dr. Larry Frazier, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Chairman of Interdisciplinary Studies
