MURFREESBORO – Day for Chowan co-chairs, Tim Britton and Darrell Rowe, are looking forward to a successful event for Chowan College this year. On November 6, 2003, Chowan College will hold it’s 14th Annual “Day”. This is significant for the college since the event has emerged as the single, largest, one-day fundraiser benefiting the institution.
“Chowan College is an instrumental part of our area and communities. We as a community benefit so much from Chowan College. You do not have to look far to see the impact of this wonderful institution. It is present in our schools, in our businesses and throughout our community. It is vitally important that our community and area support Chowan in its endeavor to provide higher education. The upcoming Day for Chowan is our opportunity to show how much we appreciate Chowan,” said Britton.
A graduate of Ahoskie High School and Barton College, Britton is currently the City Executive-Vice President of Southern Bank and Trust Company in Ahoskie. Previous work experience includes: First Citizens Bank in Ahoskie as the Financial Services Manager from 1993-99, Pioneer Savings Bank in Ahoskie as the City Executive-Vice President from 1990-93, Wachovia Bank & Trust Company in Robersonville as a Personal Banker from 1986-90, and Easco Aluminum Company in Winton as a Sales Service Manager from 1978-86. He attended the NC School of Banking at Chapel Hill for mid and advanced management programs (1998-99) and is a 2002 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.
Britton’s civic activities include being the Chairman of the Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation, being the Past President of the Ahoskie Rotary Club, being the Past President of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce, being the Vice Chairman of the Mid-East Commission Certified Development Corporation, being the Vice Chairman of the Hertford County Committee of 100, and being the Chairman of Deacons at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie.
Just as Britton is from the Roanoke-Chowan area, Darrell Rowe is a native son. Born in Northampton County, Rowe attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. Later, he was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army. In 1989, Rowe became a Deputy Sheriff in Northampton County and was hired as a Detective for Murfreesboro Police Department in 1991. Rowe has held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and is now Chief of Murfreesboro Police Department. He earned his current position in 1999. Rowe holds NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certification and is a 2003 Chowan College Magna Cum Laude graduate.
“It is an honor to have been chosen for this position as co-chair for Day for Chowan. I believe that with the town and the college working together on this event, it will be a successful endeavor,” said Rowe.
This event is a partnering between the college and community and its support for one another. Over the years, more than 1,700 friends have participated in this day from surrounding counties. The unrestricted dollars that are generated with this fundraising effort are critical to the support of the college. Last year’s campaign, through the generosity of supporters and the efforts of volunteers, resulted in gifts and pledges over $80,000.
This year, the structure of the day consists of a steering committee that will assist in the enlistment of volunteers. Each committee member will be responsible for the recruitment of one partner for himself or herself and three team captains, who in turn, will agree to bring one partner with him or her on the Day for Chowan morning kickoff. The steering committee functions as the nucleus for the “Day”. Chowan College Director of the Annual Fund, Mike Temple, is currently organizing volunteers for this year’s event.
“Volunteer participation is key to the success of Day for Chowan. Whether this is your first time volunteering for this event or your fourteenth, we value your time and energy on behalf of the college. Monies raised are put toward operating expenses and assist the college in paying for those day-to-day things not covered by other funding,” said Temple.
