Hawks Battle but UC Hits Late Shot to Win at Helms Center
February 5, 2007

MURFREESBORO - The Hawks fell to 9-12 on the year after suffering a 68-65 loss to the University of Charleston this evening. The Golden Eagles shot 67% (10-16) from beyond the three point arch, including the go ahead three with :36 to play in the game.

Chowan took a 33-31 lead into the half but got down by as many as 8 points with 5:23 to play in the game. Chowan cut the Eagle lead over the final three minutes of the game starting with a bucket by Marcus Artis to shorten the score to 61-56. On their next possession Chowan's Chris Kenon drilled a three pointer to pull Chowan within striking distance. Deon Tynes forced a turnover on the ensuing Eagle possession and dished it off to Trayvon Lathan who poetically laid in a shot with two defenders in his face while getting fouled on the same play. Lathan gave Chowan a 62-61 after sinking the foul shot.

Austin Weatherington scored on the other end of the court for the Golden Eagles to get back on top 63-62 but their lead wouldn't last long. Kenon sank another three pointer on the Hawks ensuing possession and with :54 to play in the game to give Chowan a 65-63 lead. Robert Strickland found an open Marquis Brooks set up at the three point line on the Eagle's next possession.  Brooks converted a three pointer to give UC a 66-65 lead with :36 remaining on the clock. Time ran out on the Hawks as they were unable to convert a late score. The Golden Eagles came away with the 68-65 win, moving them to 10-9 on the year.

Chowan had three players in double figures, led by Artis and Lathan who both scored 12 points. Jaleel Nelson chipped in 10 points while Montino Williams had 8 points and 3 assists. The Hawks shot 45% from the floor (24-53) and grabbed 27 rebounds to the Eagles 23 rebounds.

Chowan will host Barton College on Wednesday night at 7:30pm.
