Take Two from Coker in Season Opener

MURFREESBORO
- The Hawks swept a doubleheader from Coker College in
the season opener this afternoon, moving them to 2-0
overall. The Hawks pounded out 26 hits over 14 innings
in the double header.
Chowan used
the pitching of starter Bryan Hill and a total of 15
team hits to help propel them to an 11-0 victory in the
first game. Hill gave up 3 hits and no runs while
striking out 2 Cobra batters. Steven Brown and Spencer
Fagan closed the game, pitching the 5th and 6th innings
respectively and allowing no runs. Junior transfer Matt
Bullock was a perfect 3-3 with 3 runs scored while
freshman Nate Mitchell was 3-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run
scored. Joel Ortiz, Michael Kellett, and Joey Ryder
collected two hits in the shut win. Hill was credited
with the shut out win.
The Hawks
used a five run fourth and fifth innings to come from
behind to beat Coker in the second game. Fagan, in
relief of Billy Coburn, picked up the win. Fagan pitched
two shut out innings, setting up Brandon Hamlett who
threw the final inning. Hamlett retired the side for the
save. Brooks Walker started the game, going 2.1 innings
allowing 4 runs and striking out 2 Cobra batters.
Mitchell was perfect at the plate at 2-2 with 3 RBI and
2 runs scored. He hit a three run homer in the fourth
inning to help cut the Cobra lead. Hamlett, Kellett, and
Ortiz collected 2 hits each in the game.
Chowan and
Coker will play the final game of their three game
series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm.
