Kids Move to 5-0 After Sweeping Fairmont State in a
Double Dip

MURFREESBORO
- The baseball team moved to a perfect 5-0 after beating
Fairmont State in a double header this afternoon. The
Hawks used their final at-bats to take the first two
games of the three game series.
With the
game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Joey Ryder led off the inning with a double to center
field. One out later Mike McConnell hit a bloop single
that would score Ryder and take the game 2-1. Brandon
Hamlett picked up the win in relief of Bryan Hill who
threw 6.1 innings, scattering 5 hits and giving up an
unearned run. Hamlett came in to shut down FSU, facing 3
batters and striking out one of them. Nick Harner had
the only multiple hit game for the Hawks as he was 2-3
with one RBI.
The Hawks
found themselves trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th
inning but used a 3 run at-bat to come from behind and
get their 5th win of the season. Hamlett led the inning
off with a single to left field followed by another
single by Joel Ortiz. Justin Hollingsworth sacrifice
bunted Hamlett and Ortiz to third and second
respectively. PJ Sadler loaded the bases with a walk.
Hamlett scored on a wild pitch by FSU while Ortiz and
Sadler advanced to second and third. Michael Kellett
drove in the game-tying and winning runs with a single
back up the middle to score Ortiz and Sadler to give
Chowan a 7-6 victory.
Ortiz was
the only Hawk with two hits as he finished up 2-4 with 2
runs scored and 1 RBI. Sadler was 1-3 with 2 RBI while
Kellett was 1-4 with the game winning RBI.
Steven Brown
gets the win in relief to move to 1-0. He faced four
batters in the 7th inning for the win.
