Women's Soccer Knocks off
#1 Faulkner, Advance to Championship Match November 9, 2006
CENTRAL, SC - The women's soccer team advanced to the
NCCAA South Region Championship game after a 5-3 win
over #1 Faulkner University this morning. The Hawks, who
held the #1 region ranking for most of the season,
slipped to the #4 seed after the Longo Ratings were
released last week.
Chowan out shot Faulkner 19-10 in the match despite
falling behind 2-0 within the first ten minutes of the
match. Chowan took advantage of an own goal by the
Eagles in the 13th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Chowan
knotted the match at 2-2 when Melissa Rodgers sent a
ball in to Ashley Bradford connected from about 15 yards
out. Just two minutes later the Eagles found the back of
net to get back on top of Chowan 3-2.
With the first half winding down Chowan's Veronica
Austin connected on her first goal of the seasonto tie
the game at 3-3. Katie Perkins was credited the assit on
Austin's score.
Chowan's defense went to work in the second period,
shutting down the Eagles' offensive attack. Clara
Danzeisen put her team ahead 4-3 after Lacy Simpson
found her open near the goal in the 54th minute. Netting
her second goal the match, Bradford iced the game for
the Hawks with an unassisted goal at the 82:19 mark of
the match.
Today's win moves the Hawks to the championship match to
be played tomorrow at 9:30am. They will wait for the
winner of the #2 Palm Beach Atlantic and #3 Southern
Wesleyan match being played later today.
