Women Win
Thriller in Double OT Over Claflin
January 27, 2007
MURFREESBORO
- It took two overtime periods and several last ditch,
heroic efforts but the Hawks finally came away with a
75-72 win over Claflin University this afternoon. After
taking a 35-29 lead into half time, the Hawks had to
overcome a four point deficit with 1:28 to play in
regulation to force the first overtime period.
Ashley Banks
cut the Panther lead to 62-58 with :58 to play after
hitting 1-2 from the foul line. On the ensuing Claflin
possession the Hawks took advantage of a key turnover to
get the ball back with :25 ticks on the clock. Enter
Lauryn Perry, the first hero of the game. Perry, who
scored 26 points in the Hawks last outing and was a
perfect 4-4 from beyond the three point arc, was quiet
most of the night but showed up big as she drilled a
three pointer to knot the game at 62-62. Claflin's
Brittany Woods attempted to win the game for her team
after taking the ball down court but Tameka Christopher
grabbed the rebound from the missed shot and kicked it
out to Rachel Wood. Wood threw up a three pointer but it
fell short and the first overtime period came.
Senior Joi
Hazel showed her experience with :14 left in the first
overtime and trailing by two points she tied the game
with two free throws which eventually sent the game to
the second overtime period. With :37 remaining in the
second overtime and trailing 72-71, Perry missed the
go-ahead jumper but Tameka Christopher grabbed a key
rebound and kicked it out to Tyshaunna Winston. Winston
was fouled on her drive to the bucket and hit both foul
shots to take a 73-72 lead. Hazel iced the game with two
made foul shots with :13 to go, giving the Hawks the
eventual 75-72 win.
Hazel led
all scorers with 21 points in the game while Perry
joined her in double figures with 13 points of her own.
Alicia McMorris netted 9 points while Rachel Wood came
off the bench to get 8 points. Ashley Banks dished out 4
assists while Tameka Christopher grabbed 6 rebounds and
had 5 points.
Chowan will
play again on February 5th when they travel to St.
Augustine's for a 7:00pm tip off.
