Hang on to Beat Apprentice
January 12, 2007
NEWPORT NEWS,
VA - The women's basketball team ended a four-game skid
after hanging on to edge the Newport News Shipbuilders
on the road. The 70-66 Chowan win snapped a seven game
winning streak for the home standing Builders.
Chowan took
a 36-30 lead into the half but the Builders kept it
close and even tied the game at 45-45 at the 10:51 mark
of the second period. The Hawks scored six quick points
over the next minute to stretch their lead to 51-45.
They got up by as many as 11 points over the next five
minutes of play before the Builders tried to edge their
way back within striking distance. Despite their come
back efforts, the Builders fell short and lost to the
Hawks 70-66.
Chowan was
paced by Alicia McMorris who was 4-5 from the floor, to
include 3-3 from the three point arch. She also dished
out 5 assists in the win. Joi Hazel followed McMorris
with 15 points while Rachel Wood came off the bench to
score 10 points.
The Hawks
move to 7-8 on the year while the Builders pick up their
3rd loss at 10-3 on the season. Chowan will travel to
Virginia Union University on Tuesday night for a 6:00pm
match up. They return to the Helms Center on January
18th when they host NC Wesleyan at 7:00pm.
