MURFREESBORO, NC – The Susan Fecho: 25 Year Retrospective Exhibit opened on Friday, September 17 in Green Hall Gallery at Chowan College. This comprehensive exhibition features works throughout her twenty-five year span including silk painting, various forms of printmaking, traditional painting, and graphic design. This exhibit also features a video interview with the artist as well as catalogs that are available to the viewers. When asked about her retrospective, Fecho states, “I’m excited to be invited back to Chowan College and have the opportunity to retrace my steps. I have many fond memories of Chowan, and I’m glad that my students and friends can be a part of this experience.” Fecho’s exhibit will be at Chowan College until October 18. After Chowan College, the show will travel on to Barton College.
The driving force of Fecho’s subject choice in her work is historic iconology. “I enjoy researching symbols and architectural elements related to culture and genre; and to ponder the content, design, color and the relationships between them,” said Fecho. She also believes that “limitations of culture and gender cause icons to be interpreted differently. By viewing these icons, we hear to forgotten, yet intrinsic memories within ourselves. The Greenville Museum of Art noted that, “Susan Fecho’s monoprints and photographs provide rich textures and values that provoke curiosity about her method and technique. Her imagery derived from old abandoned houses creates the feeling of the past as well as the feeling for the present.”
Susan Fecho has been a part of exhibits since 1989. These exhibits include solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and invitationals, as well as juried exhibitions. Through these exhibits, Fecho has had the opportunity to show her artwork in not only North Carolina, but also around the United States.
Susan Fecho received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from East Carolina University in 1982 and 1988, respectively. She was a member of the Department of Arts at Chowan College from 1988 to 1995. While teaching at Chowan College, Fecho served as Chair of the Division of Visual Art from 1993 to 1995 and was responsible for starting the Graphic Design program, as we know it today. Fecho is currently serving as Chair of the Department of Art at Barton College.
