the Art of Ministry
University Relations - June 24, 2014
Chowan University CCSA scholar Macaulay Chilaka showcases the art of ministry with Pastor Monica Yungeberg of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church.
MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan Christian Service Association at Chowan University has many functions – to assist in ministerial student tuition, to assist in mission trip funding. But moreover, the CCSA connects churches with students.
As a church sees a need, Chowan’s CCSA hopes to help, as was the case with Pastor Monica Yungeberg of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church.
“We have been trying to use more visuals in worship, and decided to commission four new banners,” explained Pastor Yungeberg. “I had seen Macaulay’s work before, so we contacted him and he agreed to help out.”
CCSA scholar Macaulay Chilaka of Murfreesboro, NC has been showcasing his work for years as he goes into his senior year as a Graphic Communications major at Chowan.
“All we asked for were some updated images of figures and stories from the Bible - we never imagined how beautiful and creative the end product would be!” Yungeberg said. “He came up with the idea of ‘heroes of the Bible’ for the series, and focused on four main characters - Moses, Jonah, Jesus, and Mary Magdalene, but depicted like you’ve never seen them before.”
Chilaka’s use of vivid colors and dramatic imagery created scenes that brought new life to the Biblical events he depicted.
“We did a four-week sermon series to go along with his work and it prompted great conversation and really added such beauty to the worship space and service,” she stated. “We were so lucky that Macaulay was willing to share his gifts with us.”
