Friends of Whitaker Library

Promoting personal enrichment and academic research
The Chowan University Friends of Whitaker Library was formed to support and assist in the development of Whitaker Library. Its primary functions are twofold: (1) to provide financial support to supplement existing and planned library programs; and (2) to provide leadership in fostering greater understanding and appreciation for Whitaker Library as a source of strength for the Roanoke-Chowan and Franklin-Southampton County region.

Membership in the Chowan University Friends of Whitaker Library is open to all individuals, organizations, businesses and institutions who have a genuine interest in reading and research and who have made an annual contribution designated for the purposes of the Friends organization.

In their short history, the Friends have already provided the library with a photocopier, a microform reader/printer, microfilm, student staff wages, and funds toward a challenge grant/library automation campaign. In addition, the group has been instrumental in bringing noted regional authors and speakers to campus for cultural events, including Suzanne Britt, Raleigh News & Observer columnist A.C. Snow, and local artist and author Katherine Allen.
