Theatre @ Chowan to present, The Women of Lockerbie

An Act of Hatred inspires an Act of Love and a play,
The Women of Lockerbie

The Women of LockerbieMurfreesboro – Theatre @ Chowan will present three performances of Deborah Brevoort’s The Women of Lockerbie on April 19-21 at Chowan University.

In 1988 a terrorist bomb exploded on Pan Am flight 103 on its way from London to JFK international airport. Pieces of the plane fell on the small town of Lockerbie, Scotland. 243 passengers, 16 crew members, and 11 residents of Lockerbie were killed. Loosely inspired by these events, Deborah Brevoort’s play, The Women of Lockerbie, takes place seven years after the fatal event. A mother from New Jersey roams the hills looking for some sign of her son who was on board the flight. Meanwhile, the women of Lockerbie are fighting the US government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes and return them to the victims’ families. Ultimately, Breevort’s play is a poetic and powerful portrait of how individuals grapple with grief, and how love, eventually, triumphs over hate.

The Women of Lockerbie is the winner of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award.

The seven member cast, comprised of Chowan University students, includes Sierra Jones (Wilson, NC), Ricky McKelvin (Norfolk, VA), Alexius Brandveen (Williamsburg, VA), Devon Baker (Bowie, MD), Stacy Seacat (Eden, NC), Rebekah Sooy (Virginia Beach, VA), and Cquieane Covington (Pooler, GA).
