Campaign for Columns:
Overview

Read the Renovations article in the latest CU Today!

For the first time in many years, Chowan University has undertaken the restoration of the heart of the university – McDowell Columns Building.

Built in 1851, the Columns has survived the Civil War and World War II (doors were closed). The entire exterior of the building is receiving a complete facelift that will bring the building back to its original luster.

When thinking about Chowan University, alumni and friends immediately think about the Columns. The renovation project is the first major undertaking by President Chris White. In order to be successful, President White encourages those who love the University to give a gift – large or small.

Goal:

The goal of the Campaign for Columns is to raise necessary funds to restore the exterior of the building for the next generation of Chowanians. The Campaign for Columns seeks to raise $500,000 in cash gifts and pledges to be paid within 24 months. A challenge gift of $150,000 has been made to the campaign leaving a minimum of $350,000 to be raised.

Name Opportunities:

Trustees have approved naming each of the 8 columns for gifts in the amount of $50,000. At present time, one has been named. Windows can be named with minimum gifts of $25,000.

Gift Recognition:

  • Gifts of $10,000 and above would be given an original brick from the building that has been salvaged during the restoration of the two major walls on the back of the building.
  • Gifts of $1,000 up to $9,999.99 would be given a section of a spindle from a railing that has been replaced.
  • Gifts of $1 up to $999.99 will be listed as participants of the campaign and as One who Cares about Preserving Columns.
