The Southern Bank Foundation’s generous contribution to the Campaign for Columns paves the way for the final stages of the restoration project at the heart of the campus. With a check for $50,000 from the foundation, construction and painting should begin soon on the back half of Chowan’s 1851 McDowell Columns Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The promise of an additional $50,000 later will complete the necessary restorative work. Since the Campaign for Columns began in fall of 2007, more than $528,000 has been given through cash gifts and pledges from Chowan community businesses and individuals, including the initial challenge gift of $150,000 from loyal Chowan supporters Charles and Juanita Pond of Smithfield, VA.
