Chowan University is Christian.

Many private Christian schools have a historical relationship with a church or denomination (so does Chowan; we are the 2nd oldest Baptist university in North Carolina), but our commitment to be a small, Christian university means much more to us than just a historical relationship. Faith is a significant part of the Chowan experience. We have a robust campus ministry team, are active in building relationships with churches, seek to promote a Christian worldview, and take our commitment to Christian, higher education very seriously. We also have an expectation that our students, faculty, and staff behavior in a matter that reflects Christian morals and principles.

We also seek God's blessing and guidance on our decisions and direction for this university, God's university, which God raised-up in 1848.

Chowan University has less 1000 students.

Q: Where is Chowan University located?
A: Chowan University is located in Northeastern North Carolina in Murfreesboro. The 300+ acre campus is just 30 minutes off I-95 at the Roanoke Rapids exit. You can drive to Virginia Beach in about an hour and the Outer Banks of North Carolina are 2 hours from campus.

The town of Murfreesboro is a small community that rallies abound the campus. Chowan has the best of both worlds: a small, safe community yet the major cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach are only a short drive away. You can also be at the beach in about an hour!

Q: When can I visit Chowan University?
A: We are open for visitors every day except Sunday and on most holidays. We encourage you to visit while classes are in session so you can see students in action and get a true feel for the Chowan community. If you prefer to visit on a Saturday, we have CU Saturday visitation days one time per month in the fall. For information about CU Saturdays, click here.

Q: What can I do on my campus visit?
A: You will learn more about your academic program of interest from faculty, you will receive tips on financial assistance from the financial aid office, your admissions counselor will give you insights on how to navigate the enrollment process, and you will learn about the Chowan University on a campus tour. If you are interested in competing in one of 11 Division II athletic teams, the Admissions Office can also arrange for you to meet with a coach or a member of the Athletic Department.
