Academics: Study Abroad

Chowan University supports and encourages students to participate in a study abroad experience. A variety of programs are available, including short trips sponsored by Chowan University. The Chowan University Study Abroad Program offers students the opportunity to pursue their travel interests as part of their educational experience. Students have the opportunity to receive academic credit for any study abroad curriculum.

Faculty have led trips to Africa, Austria, England, Costa Rica, and Japan. The current Study Abroad Program began in May 2005 when President M. Christopher White and Professor of Religion Dr. J. Brabban led twenty-four participants on a twelve-day tour of Turkey and Greece. In May 2006, President White and Dr. Brabban led 39 students, alumni, and friends of the University on a similar trip to Israel and Egypt. This year, a group of twelve students, plus faculty and staff, followed the steps of early Christians through Italy as well as viewed artistic pieces that have been instrumental in teaching Christianity. The tour traveled through Rome, the Eternal City, Florence, Venice, Verona, and Milan.

The Study Abroad Programs are designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to take advantage of the culture and geography of their given destination. Students return from their experience with better knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Students who show interest in our Study Abroad programs know how expensive it can be to go, so Chowan has made a way for it to cost a lot less for our students to enjoy this unique experience.
