May 2008 Student of the Month - Ashley Bradford

Ashley Bradford

Chowan University’s School of Business announces Ashley Bradford of Chesapeake, VA as April’s Business Student of the Month. Bradford is a sophomore majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.

Bradford is looking forward to a career in advertising where she can use her creative talents. Drawing and graphics have always been an interest of hers. One of her favorite courses has been Professor Patsy Taylor’s Advertising and Promotion class. Also, since coming to Chowan, she has been inspired by another professor, Dr. Greg Taylor, to minor in history.

Bradford was recruited by Coach Georgiana Donnelly to play soccer for the Hawks in the fall of 2006. During her freshmen year at Chowan, Bradford played forward and was named all-American first team in the NCCAA. Her coaches have had a strong influence by motivating her to work hard to become successful at whatever she attempts.

Bradford’s excellent academic achievements have also earned her to be named to the Dean’s List, inducted into the freshman honor society Alpha Lambda Delta, and the history honor society Phi Alpha Theta.

Congratulations to Ashley Bradford for being selected as Chowan University’s School of Business Student of the Month!

April 2008 Student of the Month - Steve Byrum Brown

Steve Byrum BrownChowan University’s Business School Student of the Month, sophomore Steve Byrum Brown, comes from Edenton, NC, where he graduated from John A. Holmes High School and lettered in both baseball and soccer in high school. Brown also played basketball at his church, the Edenton Baptist Church, where he attended youth fellowship.

Brown, son of Jean and Steve Brown, is a Business Administration major concentrating in Small Business Management. Alpha Lambda Delta, freshmen honor society, initiated Steve as a member last year. Other honors include being named to the Dean’s List for three semesters.

Brown chose Chowan because it is located close to home, in a small community, and he has lots of friends who are or have attended Chowan University. He also was encouraged by his Aunt and Uncle, Liz and Bruce Brown, who live in Murfreesboro.

Brown plans to follow as a third generation in the family business in Edenton. Byrum Hardware is much more than a hardware store. It is well known for its beautiful gift shop along with the large variety of hardware items. His mother manages the gift shop, and his father manages the hardware portion.

Upon arriving at Chowan, 6’4” Brown played baseball until in the off season he underwent surgery for his shoulder. The shoulder did not heal as it should so he was not able to play this year and decided to concentrate on his studies.

Congratulations to Steve Byrum Brown for being selected as the student of the month in the School of Business!

March 2008 Student of the Month - Brittany Everett

Brittany EverettBrittany Everett describes herself as “adventuresome” --wanting to go rock climbing and bungee jumping. She dreams of going to other parts of the country to live, such as Tennessee, Kentucky, or cities such as Atlanta or Chicago. Attending graduate school is a possibility for her future with the ultimate goal of opening a chain of clothing stores and making a name for herself.

Brittany is a junior with concentrations both in Accounting and Small Business Management. She was born in Germany where both her father, Dexter Everett (Murfreesboro) and mother, Ingle Everett (New Orleans) were stationed in the Air Force. After returning to the states, she grew up in New Orleans graduating from Warren Easton Fundamental Senior High School. The school was severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina the year following her graduation and was completely restored last fall. While in high school, Brittany was co-captain of the flag team, a member of the National Honor Society and Who’s Who Among America’s High School Students. She graduated 12th out of over 300 students in her class.

Brittany transferred to Chowan University after attending the University of New Orleans. Here at Chowan, she has made the Dean’s List for two years, as well as the National Dean’s list. She is a recent recipient of the Randy V. Britton Memorial Scholarship. Brittany is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.

Being a hard worker fully describes Brittany. She holds down two jobs as well as attending college full time. She is a student worker in the Business Office at Chowan University and an administrative assistant at Twin Oaks Adult Home in Como, North Carolina, where she has worked for over a year and a half. Twin Oaks is a family owned business visioned and started by her grandmother, Maggie Everett.

Brittany is a Christian and attends Mill Neck Baptist Church in Como. She is very close to her family and lives in Como around a “circle of relatives”—aunts, uncles, cousins, and a great grandmother. Her great grandmother, Magdalene Copeland Banks, is 90 years of age and Brittany visits with her every day.

This past spring Brittany auditioned for “American’s Next Top Model.” Who knows, one day we may see her going down the runway or gracing the cover of a magazine.

Congratulations, Brittany, upon your selection as Business Student of the Month. May you become successful as you follow your dreams.
