“I feel extremely blessed to be at Chowan University and have the opportunity to teach in the Department of Sport Studies and Physical Education. I believe I can speak for the SSPE faculty in that we truly enjoy working with our students as they develop personally and as young professionals. While the faculty takes pride in providing a challenging curriculum, we also appreciate our small class sizes and personal approach in delivering instruction in a dedicated and caring manner.”

Education:
Kirk E. Peterson received his B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. He received his Masters of Science in Sports Psychology, his Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling and his Doctorate in Sports Psychology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Kirk E. Peterson came to work at Chowan in 2004.

Dan Surface Dan Surface
Associate Professor of Sports Studies and Physical Education

“Preparing students for a lifetime of wellness and fitness.”

Education:
Dan Surface received his B.A. degree in Health and Physical Education from Guilford College. He received his Masters of Science in Physical Education from the University of Tennessee. He did additional graduate study at UNC-Greensboro, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Azusa Pacific College, and East Carolina University. Dan Surface came to work at Chowan in 1970.

Missy Hernandez Missy Hernandez
Assistant Professor of Sports Studies and Physical Education

Education:
Missy Hernandez received her B.S. degree in Physical Education from Coker College. She received her Masters of Science in Sport Administration from Florida State University. She is currently enrolled at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Florida, to receive her Education Doctorate in Higher Education. Missy Hernandez came to work at Chowan in 2006.
